I remember watching some of our boys fighting in the olympics against Russians and Cubans who had had 100’s of fights whilst our amateurs tended to be 18-21 year old kids.
Stevenson was good but to be honest he had over 300 fights and was mainly fighting kids, and he also lost 20 odd times was well. I’m sure if some of the average heavyweights who turned pro had stayed as an amateur they would have had similar records

Comma - I think that's one of boxings great unanswered questions, Stevenson was just awesome, was it three golds on the spin he won?

He must have been under so much pressure to defect and make his millions but I guess he loved Cuba too much!

Slightly off track but as I like to watch old classic flights on YouTube when the missus has gone up for an early night I watched the Mickey Ward v Arturo Gatti trilogy last night ... all 3 fights were savage , but the first was unbelievable... both fighters went at it toe to toe from the first bell and absolutely battered one another, I think it was named as one of the top 3 best fights ever ... if you like your boxing really worth watching for sheer guts and will to win.

I just watched the 3 Ali v Frazier fights they were proper punishing fights.
Not much love lost between those two.

My Dad used to get me up for Clay's fights including this one I was around 14 and loved it.

I also watch him fight our very own Henry and was lucky not to be counted out I hated Clay for that but soon become a massive fan.

Shame the punch that knocked him out in the second fight didn’t land as it would have made it plausible. This is the man who didn’t blink when the police hit him with batons

I lost count of the number of left jabs Ali stuck on Liston.

Sonny Liston was a great fighter (some boxing experts put him in the top 3 of all-time). Couldn't read or write and was manipulated by his mangers and the mob for years. Had a sad ending.

The Bunce & Costello podcast on BBC is a special on this fight, has a great interview with Angelo Dundee on too. Well worth a listen, it’s on BBC Sounds.

Re: Clay v Liston
Remember Ali started boxing at a lighter weight and only just got in the Light heavyweight amateur division when he won his gold at Rome.
He recalls that in his early years he worked constantly on his footwork. Paid off.

Re: Clay v Liston
Good point re Lewis. For the first part of his career he was unpopular here as he was seen as Canadian and not as well loved as Bruno. His record is very good and is streets ahead of what AJ has achieved. I remember when he appeared at a West Ham game just before he fought Bruno. I was lucky enough to be sitting by the tunnel as he walked out and got his autograph. someone asked him if he would beat Bruno and he said something like "Don't worry, I 'll take care of Bruno". Signed my programme and seemed like a decent fella. A picture of me next to him appeared in the Daily Mirror the day after.

If Ali was alive now he'd murder Covid19... and even if it dreamt of beating Ali it better wake up and apologise...

Re: Clay v Liston
I watched that Liston fight myself on youtube the other night....Ali /Clay was unbelievable , not the heaviest puncher but he made Fury who is brilliant at avoiding punches , look like a lumbering oaf. Foot and hand speed of a lightweight , heart of a lion and a granite chin. A young Mike Tyson in his prime was the most fearsome and destructive heavyweight that I've ever seen but he's very honest with his view of what would have happened had the best versions of themselves ever met in the ring...He says that he'd have been easily dealt with and stopped by Clay/Ali in the late rounds who would have just been too quick and too skillful for him... Tyson said something like 'Ali was a beast who would've taken me into deep waters to drown '... and he's not one to be humble about his own abilities in the ring either. Laughable that Wilder was bragging a few months ago that he'd have beaten all of the great heavyweights in their prime .......
Actually on the subject of past 'great' heavyweights Lennox Lewis has been a little underrated on the lists I think...apart from his shock loss to Rahman he beat everyone that he came up against , most of them decisively. I've watched a few of his fights on youtube recently and had forgotten how good he was... the Klitschko fight and the Bruno fight are both good viewing. Shame that Lennox wasn't always fully appreciated by the British boxing public as he's a Hammer..

Re: Clay v Liston
In my time there has been no other heavyweight to stand astride the division quite like Clay/Ali. At his best he purred like a Rolls Royce in the ring. In his first stint as champion he had no real competition but his comeback career and his fights with Frasier and Foreman were epic ( although by then he did not dance around the ring like he used to ).

I often wondered what the heavyweight division would have been like if the Cuban Theofilio Stevenson had been allowed to turn pro after his Olympic gold.

Liston was supposed to be unbeatable, Clay / Ali just toyed with him
